The President of the European Commission Mr J. Barroso held the ninth annual meeting with religious leaders: Christians (Orthodox, Catholic, Protestants), Jews, Muslims and Hindus. The meeting was co-chaired by the President of the European Council, Mr H. Van Rompuy and one of the Vice-Presidents of the European Parliament Mr L. Surjan. From the Orthodox Church participants were Metropolitan Emmanuel of France (representing CEC), the Patriarch of Romania, Mr Daniel, Metropolitan Ieremias Wroclaw (Church of Poland), Archbishop of Finland, Mr Leo and as observers: Bishop Porphyrios of Neapolis. and Metropolitan of Achaia Athanasios (Church of Greece). The meeting was held at the building of the European Commission Berlaymont.
As is known the Lisbon Treaty (2009) has been institutionalize the dialogue with the religious leaders. The subject of this year's meeting was "Putting citizens at the heart of Europe in times of change." Examined the issue of strengthening the dialogue of the European Institutions with citizens and social organizations for the future of Europe and the individual and collective rights that are guaranteed through the European citizenship. During the discussion the significant work and support provided by many Churches to citizens of the states, where they are found, in the difficult period of economic crisis, especially the European south, was highlighted. The European leaders urged for active participation and attendance in the upcoming elections in May 2014 so that the principles and views of European citizens are represented by the MEPs in the European Parliament.
