On the 13th of July His Beatitude the Archbishop of New Justiniana and All Cyprus Mr. Chrysostomos II had a meeting with the European Commissioner of Justice, Fundamental rights and Citizenship Mrs. Viviane Reding and was held at the office of the Commissioner. The presence of the Archbishop of Nova Justiniana and All Cyprus Mr. Chrysostomos II in Brussels was due to an invitation by the European Commission’s President Mr. Jose Manuel Barroso for a meeting on the 12th July 2012 between the Presidents of the European Institutions and the European Religious leaders.
His Beatitude the Archbishop of New Justiniana and All Cyprus Mr. Chrysostomos II was accompanied by His Grace Bishop Porfyrios of Neapolis, Director of the Representation of the Church of Cyprus to the European Institutions.
During the meeting it was discussed the constant violation of religious freedom in the occupied part of the Republic of Cyprus by the occupying military forces and the occupying regime.
His Beatitude asked for a more active support from the European Commission for the protection of the cultural heritage in the north occupied part of the island and the safeguard of free religious ceremonies in the occupied monuments.
Commissioner Mrs. Viviane Reding reassured the Archbishop of Cyprus that the Commission is fully conscious about the sad situation and that they will continue their efforts for its termination. The days of the Cypriot Presidency of the European Council offers the opportunity for a stronger dialogue and for the total solution of the Cyprus problem.
