At the Cathedral of Saint John the Theologian in Nicosia and after celebrating the Divine Liturgy by His Eminence the Metropolitan of Pafos Mr. Georgios and His Grace Bishop Porfyrios of Neapolis, an ecclesiastical service specially formed for the assumption of the presidency of the European Council by the Republic of Cyprus was celebrated.
At the end of the service His Eminence the Metropolitan of Pafos welcomed the officials and the congregation. Messages from the churches of Denmark (the country which is handing the presidency to the Republic of Cyprus) and from the Irish Council of churches (country which is to take over in January 2013) were read. A message from the Church Society and Commission (CSC) was also read by its representative Mrs. Elisabeta Kitanovic.
The service ended with a symbolic lighting of a candle, for the success of the tasks of the presidency of the Republic of Cyprus.
A reception followed at the Synodical of the Holy Archbishopric. During the service they were present the Deputy Secretary of State Mr. Andreas Mauroyiannis, a representative of the president of the Cyprus’ Parliament, the Chief of the National Guard, representatives from all Cyprus Parliament Parties as well as Ambassadors from the states members of the European Union sited in Cyprus.
