On the 18th of May 2011 at the office of the Representation of the Ecumenical Patriarchate at the European Union in Brussels, it was held a meeting of the five representatives of the Committee of Representatives of the Orthodox Churches in European Union. They were present the Metropolitan of France Mr. Emmanuel (Ecumenical Patriarchate) f. Andre Eliseev (Patriarchate of Moscow), Protopresbyter Sorin Selaru (Patriarchate of Romania) Bishop of Neapolis Mr. Porfyrios (Church of Cyprus) and Metropolitan of Achaia Mr. Athanasios (Church of Greece). The main topic of the meeting was the upcoming annual meeting of the religious leaders, that it is organized by the president of the European Commission Mr. J.M Barroso. The meeting will be held on the 30th of May 2011 at the European Commission under the theme: A partnership for democracy and shared prosperity: a common willingness to promote democratic rights and liberties.
The members of the CROCEU discussed and analyzed in depth the issue of this year meeting. They expressed their opinions and the views of their Churches in the important topic of defending the religious freedom of all humanity and especially of the Christians that live as minorities in the countries of Northern Africa and Middle East, which face dramatic and radical changes due to the inversion of the previous governments.
The committee wrote an epistle which will be sent to the President of the European Commission Mr. J.M Barroso.
