The 60th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Cyprus was celebrated at the Cathedral of Archangels Michael and Gabriel in Brussels, on Sunday 27 September 2020. The Liturgy and the doxology were celebrated by His Grace Bishop Porfyrios of Neapolis, Director of the Office of the Church of Cyprus at the European Institutions.
A speech was delivered by the Representative of Cyprus to the Political and Security Committee Mr. Stavros Hatziyiannis. In his speech he underscored the long-lasting struggles of Cypriot Hellenism, and that we should be proud for the Republic of Cyprus and the achievements it has accomplished in its 60 years of existence. His Eminence Metropolitan Athenagoras of Belgium was represented by Protopresbyter Fr. Stavros Triantafyllou, who also addressed the congregation on behalf of His Eminence. His Grace Porfyrios, in a brief speech, highlighted the importance of safeguarding the Republic and maintaining the strong bonds and unity of Hellenism around the world, while keeping our faith that Christ will provide for His people, inside His Church.
The Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic in Belgium Mr. Dionysios Kalamvrezos, the Representative of the Church of Greece to the European Union His Eminence Metropolitan Athanasios of Achaia, European officials, Greeks from Cyprus and Greece working for the European Institutions, and a multitude of faithful, were also present.
