During a service on Monday 22 of February 2016, fr. Heikki Huttunen was named as the new elected General Secretary of the Conference of European Churches. Fr. Heikki Huttunen succeeded pastor Dr. Guy Liagre. It is remarkable that is the first time in the history of CEC that an Orthodox priest is appointed to the office of the General Secretary.
At the service they were present the president of CEC Anglican bishop Christopher Hill, bishop Polycarpus Augin Aydin of the Syrian Coptic church, the supervisor of the Office of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to the European Institutions Metropolitan of Belgium Athenagoras, the Representative of the Patriarchate of Moscow to the European Union fr. Dimitry Sizonenko, the Representative of the Patriarchate of Romania to the European Union fr. Sorin Selaru, the Representative of the Church of Greece Metropolitan of Achaia Athanasios, representatives from the European Institutions members of the Governing Board and the staff of CEC.
After the service the new General Secretary accepted the felicitations of the representatives as well as of the people. A reception followed.
