The 55th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Cyprus was celebrated at the Cathedral of Archangels Michael and Gabriel in Brussels. The Liturgy and the doxology were presided by His Eminence the Metropolitan of Belgium Mr. Athenagoras while His Grace Bishop Porfyrios of Neapolis, Director of the Office of the Church of Cyprus at the European Institutions, participated too.
A speech was delivered by His Excellency the Ambassador of Cyprus in Belgium Mr. Antonios Grivas. In his speech he underscored the battling spirit of Cyprus Hellenism that despite its historical adventures in the course of centuries it managed to gained freedom from the English conqueror on the 1 October 1960. Today the Republic of Cyprus despite the fact that that it is a full member of the European Union is still struggling against the plans of turkifying the 37% of the occupied part of Cyprus. We claim, he stressed, a viable and functional solution based on European principles and values that will ensure peace and prosperity on the island.
