Meeting of the Archbishop of Cyprus Mr. Chrysostomos II with Mrs. Androulla Vassiliou Commissioner for Education, Culture Multilingualism and Youth and Mr. Stefan Fule Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy on the 28th of June 2011
During the afternoon of the 28th of June His Beatitude Archbishop of Cyprus Mr. Chrysostomos II had a meeting with the European Commissioner of Education Mrs. Androulla Vassiliou and the Commissioner of Enlargement Mr. Stefan Fule. The meeting was held at the office of the Commissioner Mrs. Androulla Vassiliou. During the meeting it was discussed the violations of religious freedom of the enclaved people as well as the rest of the refuges that are in the non occupied part of the Cyprus Republic. His Beatitude thanked the European Officers and the European Commission in Cyprus for their tasks, as well as for the 2 million euro that were granted in 2011 in an effort to save the religious monuments and the rest of the cultural heritage that is in the occupied territories of Cyprus.
He also asked the Commission to continue its funding and to increase it during the upcoming years because of the large number of the monuments. His beatitude mentioned also that the Commission should intervene when the Turkish occupying regime prevails the clergy to celebrate any kind of religious ceremony. Both European Commissioners promised to maximize their efforts for ending the violation of religious freedom in the occupied parts of Cyprus as well as the restoration and the protection of the monuments.
