On Saturday the 8th of May 2010, at the Institution of Archbishop Makarios the 3rd was organized by the office of Interchurches Relationships and European Affairs of the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus, a seminar on the theme: The Church of Cyprus and the European Union. The seminar was in the memory of the 50 years from the foundation of the Republic of Cyprus.
Among the proposers who took part and successfully contributed with their speeches were Bishop Porfyrios of Neapolis, Director of the Representation of the Church of Cyprus to the European Union, the Metropolitan of Konstantia and Ammohostos (Famagusta) Vassilios, his speech was read by Dr. George Kakkouras, Mrs Androulla Kaminara, Head of the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus, Mr. Giannakis Matsis, ex-MEP, Dr. Theocharous Eleni, MEP, and Mr. Tassos Georgiou, Head of the European Parliament Office in Cyprus.
Through the speeches, the conversation and the questions made by the audience, a lot of informations were given for the role and the power of the European Commission, the European Parliament and their Representations in Cyprus. It was also mentioned, the role which played and continues to play the Representation of the Church of Cyprus in Brussels which are the center of European Union’s decisions. In addition the Representation of the Church of Cyprus is an evidence of Church concern to maintain the principles and values of Christianity which are part of the European Union.
